Be Prepared for Hurricane Season
Virginia Beach,
May 30, 2012 -
This week is Hurricane Preparedness Week; therefore, it is imperative that residents make adequate plans for this increase in storm activity in the coming months. With the vulnerability of Hampton Roads to the threat of hurricanes, it is important for residents to ensure that they have plans in place to respond swiftly and appropriately to a hurricane alert – with the resources available to them.
This should include the following basic preparations:
1. Build a Kit/”To-Go” bag that contains emergency supplies.
2. Make a Plan – prepare your family, your business, and your property.
3. Be Informed – familiarize yourself with the terms and how to identify a hurricane.
To prepare yourself for the coming hurricane season, you can visit the Federal Emergency Management Administration’s (FEMA) “Get Ready” website: http://www.ready.gov/hurricanes. This website has helpful tips, advice, and information about how to best prepare for hurricane season.
Additionally, please feel free to contact our Virginia Beach district office at 757-687-8290 or our Eastern Shore office at 757-789-5172 if you require any assistance with a federal agency that oversees disaster relief or have questions about adequate planning.
Last year, Hampton Roads – and the East Coast and Mid-Atlantic States -- experienced the fury of Hurricane Irene. While the damage in our area was not as severe as many predicted, it should serve as a sobering reminder to all of us that the threat hurricanes bring to the loss of life and property is a real one, and should not be taken lightly. Constituents of the 2nd district should be informed, stay vigilant and remember the importance of being prepared during this season of increased storm activity.
