Remembering the Men of Operation Red Wings
Washington,
Jun 28, 2012 -
Seven years ago today our region and nation lost 19 brave warriors - 11 Navy SEALs and eight Army Special Operations Soldiers in Operation Red Wings.
The acts of valor these men displayed on that fateful June day have not been forgotten. Out of that mission our nation awarded its top honor, the Medal of Honor, to LT Michael Murphy, who was the first service member to receive the Medal of Honor for military action in Afghanistan. Two Navy Cross and other distinguished awards were posthumously given to other members of the elite SEAL team. The lone survivor of the team, Chief Petty Officer Marcus Luttrell, was awarded the Navy Cross in 2007.
We honor the memory of these noble warriors and care for their families, and all of America's Gold Star Families.
