Rigell Statement on Enactment of Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012
Washington,
Aug 7, 2012 -
WASHINGTON – Congressman Scott Rigell (VA-2) issued the following statement today after President Obama signed into law the Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012, legislation which Rigell voted for in July. The legislation, which had strong bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate, requires the President to detail how the administration plans to implement the defense budget cuts scheduled to take place on January 2, 2013. With the President’s signature, the administration is required under the law to submit this report to Congress within 30 days. Rigell said:
“I am pleased that the President signed into law the Sequestration Transparency Act. This bipartisan law will bring more clarity to the sequestration process, including how our national security and our men and women in uniform might be affected by these looming budget cuts, and what the impact might be to the Hampton Roads economy.
“Today’s signing is a step in the right direction, but we must get these cuts completely off the table as soon as possible. There is still sufficient time for us to come together and do what is right: find the common ground to counter these defense cuts with other federal savings. We can, and we must, do the hard work necessary to stop these cuts from hurting our country.”
