The Rigell Report: My Father

Dear Friend,
I am mindful that not every American grew up with a man like Ike Rigell for a father.
Ike Rigell, who is now nearly 90 years old, taught me about the importance of hard work, and faith, and duty, and honor. He taught me how to hunt and fish, and to appreciate the outdoors. I remember hearing him say that it was a privilege to pay taxes in America – not because he believed in big government, but because some of that money went to pay our men and women in uniform who were fighting for us, and to care for the veterans and families who had sacrificed on our behalf.
When I was growing up, most of my dad's dinners were either in the oven or in the refrigerator by the time he got home from work. As a NASA engineer, he had the honor of working on the Apollo, Saturn, and Explorer programs. He was truly at the tip of the spear in making America the world's leader in space exploration.
He raised four kids and is now the grandfather of 12 and great grandfather of four! What a legacy! But of all my dad’s life accomplishments, I know that he is deeply proud of his service as an Iwo Jima Marine. Thanks to an amazing Virginia Beach-based organization called Mercy Medical Airlift, my dad and some of his fellow veterans took a trip back to Iwo Jima and the Pacific Islands earlier this year. This Father’s Day, I want to thank all the fathers across our great nation who are raising the next generation of Americans who will keep America strong and free. Fatherhood is a tremendous blessing and an awesome responsibility. And every day is worth it.
