Rigell: Reopen the Government
Calls for a House vote on a clean CR

Washington, D.C. - Today Congressman Scott Rigell (VA-2) called for the House of Representatives to vote on a clean Continuing Resolution (CR) to reopen the government. Rigell, who represents a defense-heavy district that has suffered tremendously from furloughs caused by the sequester, released the following statement:

“The House of Representatives sent four alternatives to the Senate to keep the government open while addressing the heavy and increasing burden of the (Un)Affordable Care Act. Each offer was extended in good faith and represented a willingness to compromise.

“In rejecting outright all four offers, and without offering a single counter offer, the Senate demonstrated an absolute unwillingness to negotiate. The result? Gridlock and a government shutdown. The shutdown is hurting my district – including the military and the hard working men and women who have been furloughed due to the defense sequester.

“Republicans fought the good fight. The fight continues but is not advanced by a government shutdown that damages our economy and harms our military.

“The time has come to pass a clean CR to reopen the government.”
