The Rigell Report: The President
Visits Hampton Roads

Dear Friend,
Last week we welcomed President Obama to our district, home to more men and women in uniform than any other district in America. It is always an honor to have the President of the United States in our own backyard – regardless of political party!
Before he arrived, I asked the President to address - directly and decisively - the massive, violent reduction in defense spending that is headed our way. Our defense community faces tremendous uncertainty, and our Commander-in-Chief is remarkably silent on this issue. I call on the President to work with Congress now to address these looming cuts, while there is still time to find common ground.
I also asked the President to address his full moratorium on Virginia’s Coastal Energy. There is broad, bipartisan support for unleashing the job-creating potential off Virginia’s shores – more than 18,000 jobs! As he addresses future generations of Americans in our district and across the country, the President must present them with the truth about the economy, along with the solutions that will provide a brighter future for them and their children and grandchildren, and the leadership to deliver on those promises.
Defense and energy are two great challenges that are so critical to our region and our country. And in any great challenge, there is great opportunity! Opportunity to come together – not just as Republicans and Democrats, but as fellow Americans – to strengthen our nation’s security while jump-starting our economy. We can, we must, and we will!
Mindful that I work for you, I remain,
Yours in Freedom,
Scott
